While the Miss Buford Scholarship Program strives to recognize achievement in many ways,
we reserve the right to modify awards in the event of low participation in any given year.
Peer Determined Awards
Miss People's Choice is the contestant who receives the most support from audience funds on pageant night. Contestants decorate the gift bag (we provide) to reflect their personality and style and place it on display in the lobby during the pageant. Audience members are encouraged to fill their favorite contestant's bag with "dollar votes" through intermission when the bags will be counted. The judges are unaware of the results of this election, and audience voting has no bearing on the judges' decisions. The People's Choice totals will not be added to the contestants' totals for the Miss Sweetheart Program.
Miss Congeniality (one winner) is selected by the contestants during the week of the pageant. Miss Congeniality is the young lady who most displayed a positive and helpful attitude, and who was an ideal positive role model for the other contestants during the week of pageant preparation. This category is not included in the final tabulation for the Miss Buford crown.
Judges' Awards
Miss Photogenic (one winner) - In the Photogenic category, contestants submit a photo to be judged. A panel of judges selects a winner based on beauty reflected in a still photograph. This category is not included in the final tabulation for the Miss Buford crown.
Miss Buford Runway (one winner) acknowledges the contestant who most displayed strong modeling potential in the casual wear and evening wear portions of the competition. The winner of this award is selected by our judges based on natural beauty and stage presence. This category is not included in the final tabulation for the Miss Buford crown.
Grade Level Crowned Representatives
Miss Freshman Buford (chosen from the freshman class)
Miss Sophomore Buford (chosen from the sophomore class)
Miss Junior Buford (chosen from the junior class)
Miss Buford (chosen from the senior class)
(Actual number of runners-up in each grade level may be determined by final number of participants in that grade level.)
Miss Buford, Miss Junior, Miss Sophomore, Miss Freshman Buford are the top scorers, respectively, in the judged categories. The categories and percentages are Interview, 50%, Casual Wear, 20%, and Evening Wear, 30%. Whereas the casual wear and evening wear competitions are presented in front of a live audience, the Miss Buford interviews are held prior to the pageant in a formal interview setting designed to prepare the contestant to more adequately face college and job interviews. Each contestant spends five minutes with our panel of judges in a formal interview. The judges are permitted to ask questions of each contestant related to current social issues affecting teens and the fact sheet prepared by the contestant. Some of the judging criteria include poise, personality, appearance, natural beauty, grace, presentation, comprehension, and the ability to communicate.
